Art Therapy

Active art-making can help enrich the lives of individuals, families, and communities. Through these fun and engaging processes, more opportunities are created to help encourage communication; while also assisting the individual to improve excellent motor skills and sensory processing issues. Actively engaging your child in art-making activities for 15-20 minutes, at least two times per week will help your child build and improve their communication, turn to take, and joint attention skills. Art therapy is the belief that the creative process involved in artistic self-expression helps people resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness as well as achieve insight. (American Art Therapy Association) Below you can find some simple art activities that do just that! Helpful tip: Most of  the art supplies listed below are used in all of our DIY projects; and can be found at your local Dollar Tree.

Simple Art Activities:

  • Coloring, erasing, on chalk board
  • Painting or drawing on adjustable floor easel
  • Sculpting play-doh factory presses and molds
  • Using rolling pin to flatten play-doh
  • Coloring or drawing with crayons on textured objects
  • Threading beads on string to make jewelry
  • Cutting & pasting

Art Supplies needed: 

  • Large crayons
  • Construction paper
  • Markers
  • Play dough
  • Stamp pad
  • Stickers
  • Child-safe scissors
  • Water color paints
  • Paint Brushes
  • Large Chalk/Eraser
  • Large beads
  • Hemp String
  • Glue sticks

Helpful tips during art activities: 

  • Figure out what object/toy your child likes from the list of supplies
  • Find the smile 🙂
  • Seat your-self face to face with your child
  • Eliminate distractions
  • Follow your child’s lead
  • Narrate as you go
  • Offer help
